Upstairs in the lounge we spy a huddle of local brewers and cider-makers chatting by the fire. A stash of artisan ales, lagers and ciders sit on ice in silver buckets nearby. It’s a nice space – modern with lots of natural light.

HIGH on a hill in Healesville is a little bit of heaven called Mt Rael. There, comfy rooms to rest your head after a busy week at work are a mere hop and skip away from its fine-dining restaurant. The valley views are pretty damn amazing and it’s all an hour from the big smoke. It provides a mini-break that’s stress-free and makes you think: ‘‘Life ain’t that bad’’. Mt Rael was built as a private homestead in the late ’60s and is named after original owners, Ray and Laurel (Ra-El) Kennedy. Current helmsmen Sean Lee and John Knoll have been putting their stamp on the place for the past nine years.

Sunday lunch: Mount Rael, Healesville
April 16, 2011

ENJOYING one of the best views in the Yarra Valley, this dining room is one of the region’s hidden delights. Unless you know its location, you could easily over-shoot the turnoff. And don’t let the steep, unsealed, entrance road put you off, for once in this appealing, light-filled 120-seat restaurant with expansive balcony overlooking Healesville racecourse and village, you won’t want to leave. Some book for lunch and stay the night in one of the five on-site suites.

Former executive chef John Knoll has returned to the kitchen ably assisted by head chef Jason Loeschenkohl (formerly of the Healesville Hotel). The menu salutes much local produce from regional stalwarts such as Yarra Valley Game, Yarra Valley Pasta and the Yarra Valley Dairy in dishes such as chevre ravioli served with local pickled green walnuts and golden beets ($17.90) and braised goat pithivier served with tangy candied orange, Swiss chard and pomegranate dressing ($18.90). They call for Little Yering chardonnay ($8.50 a glass, $35 a bottle).
